Provided are (1) a novel phenyl sulfonate compound, (2) a nonaqueous electrolytic solution comprising an electrolyte salt dissolved in a nonaqueous solvent and containing a phenyl sulfonate compound of the following general formula (II) in an amount of from 0.01 to 10% by mass of the nonaqueous electrolytic solution, and (3) a lithium battery containing the nonaqueous electrolytic solution and excellent in low-temperature cycle property.

Two chromatography-free and eco-friendly protocols have been developed to synthesize aryl tosylates and mesylates by the tosylation and mesylation of the corresponding hydroxyarenes, respectively. These protocols are superior to other known ones regarding the simplicity, reaction time and conditions, the range of substrates, yields, and environmental friendliness.

A lithium secondary battery including: a positive electrode which contains a positive electrode active material capable of absorbing and desorbing lithium; a negative electrode which contains a negative electrode active material capable of absorbing and desorbing lithium; and a non-aqueous electrolytic solution, wherein at least one of the positive electrode or the negative electrode contains a polymer that is a reaction product of a defined compound (A) and a defined compound (B) which is different from compound (A), and the non-aqueous electrolytic solution contains an additive (X). The additive (X) is at least one compound selected from the group consisting of: a carbonate compound having a carbon-carbon unsaturated bond, a carbonate compound having a halogen atom, an alkali metal salt, a sulfonic acid ester compound, a sulfuric acid ester compound, a nitrile compound, a dioxane compound, and a substituted aromatic hydrocarbon compound.

The scope and limitations of direct arylation of fluorinatedaromatics with aryl sulfonates was examined. Pd(OAc)2, in the presence of MePhos and KOAc in THF, efficiently catalyzed the direct arylation of fluoro aromatics with aryl triflates under ambient conditions. Sterically hindered triflates and heteroaryl triflates gave good to excellent yields of the cross coupled products using a modified catalyst
