We have developed an eco-friendly and chemo-selective photocatalytic synthesis of sulfoxides or sulfones via oxidation of sulfides (thioethers) at ambient temperature using air or O2 as the oxidant. An inexpensive thioxanthone was used as the photocatalyst. Our method offers excellent chemical yields and good functional group tolerance. A synthetic approach for new 2-hydroxymethyl-5-ethoxy-1,3-oxathiolane derivatives is described. These heterocyclic five membered rings are suitably substituted to be potential sugar candidates in nucleoside chemistry.

Bi(NO3)(3).5H(2)O, a cheaply available, crystalline solid has been found to readily effect selective oxidation of a variety of sulfides to sulfoxides in acetic acid medium at room temperature in fair to good yields.
