Nontransition metal-catalyzed synthesis of 2-aryl benzothiazoles was achieved through K2S2O8-mediated oxidative condensation of benzothiazoles with arylaldehydes. The same transformation can also be effected when the arylaldehydes were replaced with phenylglyoxylic acids.

A straightforward strategy for the synthesis of 2-arylbenzothiazoles from 2-aminothiophenol and aryl aldehydes in air/DMSO oxidant system has been developed.
