  A syndiotactic polyolefin is obtained in a high yield by polymerization or copolymerization of an olefin of the formula R.sup.a --CH.dbd.CH--R.sup.b in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a metallocene of the formula I ##STR1## and an aluminoxane. This polyolefin has a very high syndiotactic index. At a low polymerization temperature, a polyolefin having a low average molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution is obtained, and at a high polymerization temperature a polymer having a high average molecular weight and a wide molecular weight distribution is obtained. Shaped articles produced from the polymers are distinguished by a high transparency, flexibility, tear strength and excellent surface gloss.

  The reaction of MCl4 (M = Zr, Hf) with the dilithium salt of 1-cycolopentadienyl-1-fluorenyl-1,1-diphenylmethane in pentane at ambient temperature leads to the formation of the complexes (eta5-C5H4CPh2-eta5-C13H8)MCl2. NMR and X-ray diffraction data confirm that the fluorenyl groups are eta5-bonded in these complexes. When activated with aluminoxane or other appropriate ionizing agents both complexes catalyze the stereospecific polymerization of propylene to syndiotactic polypropylene of high molecular weight and tacticity.

  The catalytic properties of ((RPh)-Ph-X)(2)C(Cp)(Flu)MCl2 complexes (R-X = Cl, F or CF3; M = Zr or Hf) in propylene polymerization were studied. The results showed dependences of stereospecificity and polymerization activity on the substituent on phenyl group. When R-X is CF3, the activity is 1.38 times of that of the complex with no substituent at 1 atm propylene pressure and is extremely high at 3.0 MPa propylene pressure. The CF3 group increased the regioirregular insertion during polymerization to produce partially crystalline s-PP. When R-X is halogen, the obtained polymer has higher melting point than that obtained from the complex with no substituent. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
