    The invention relates to a process for the preparation of ε-caprolactam, wherein ε-caprolactam is prepared starting from butadiene, carbon monoxide, hydrogen and ammonia and the process comprises: 1. carbonylating butadiene in the presence of an alkanol and a catalyst comprising palladium, a multidentate phosphine ligand and an acidic co-catalyst to produce alkyl-4-, alkyl-3- and alkyl-2-pentenoate, 1'. optionally isomerising the alkyl-3- and/or alkyl-2-pentenoate into alkyl-4-pentenoate, 2. hydroformylating the alkyl-4-, alkyl-3- and alkyl-2-pentenoate in the presence of a catalyst comprising rhodium and an organic phosphorous containing ligand to produce alkyl-5-formylvalerate, 3. reductively aminating alkyl-5-formylvalerate in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst comprising ruthenium on a carrier catalyst to produce ε-caprolactam and ε-caprolactam precursors, 4. optionally converting ε-caprolactam precursors at elevated temperature into ε-caprolactam.

    Provided are: a practically excellent polymer electrolyte composition having excellent chemical stability of being resistant to strong oxidizing atmosphere during operation of fuel cell, and achieving excellent proton conductivity under low-humidification conditions, excellent mechanical strength and physical durability; a polymer electrolyte membrane, a membrane electrode assembly, and a polymer electrolyte fuel cell each using the same. The polymer electrolyte composition of the present invention comprises at least an ionic group-containing polymer (A) and a phosphorus-containing additive (B), the phosphorus-containing additive (B) being at least one of a phosphine compound and a phosphinite compound. The polymer electrolyte membrane, the membrane electrode assembly, and the polymer electrolyte fuel cell of the present invention are structured by the polymer electrolyte composition.

  • Unsaturated polyester resins modified with liquid rubber-epoxy adducts

    An unsaturated polyester resin is toughened by reacting into its backbone an epoxy-terminated reactive liquid polymer (epoxy-RLP). The epoxy-RLP can be a difunctional epoxy-RLP or a reaction product statistical monofunctional epoxy-RLP or a blended product statistical monofunctional epoxy-RLP. The reactive liquid polymer has a carbon-carbon backbone typically containing polymerized units of at least one vinylidene monomer having at least one terminal CH₂=C〈 group, preferably a copolymer backbone of 1,3-butadiene/acrylonitrile. The modified unsaturated polyester is prepared by co-reacting the epoxy-RLP with the reactants of the unsaturated polyester resin by conventional means. The inventive resins have improved fracture energy toughness over unmodified unsaturated polyester resins.

    Unsaturated polyester resins of the type already having reactive liquid polymers reacted into the backbone of the resins, are cured in the presence of a reactive liquid polymer additive admixed with the prereacted unsaturated polyester resin. Heating of this system during cure causes the reactive liquid polymer additive to miscibilize with the unsaturated polyester resin. The unsaturated polyester resin modified in the manner described above shows a significant enhancement in toughness as measured by fracture energy over unmodified counterparts or counterparts modified by known methods of adduction or admixing alone.
