A polyolefin fiber having an improved initial elongation, comprises a strongly drawn body of a composition comprising ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene and an ultra-high-molecular-weight copolymer of ethylene with an olefin having at least 3 carbon atoms at such a ratio that the content of the olefin having at least 3 carbon atoms in the entire composition is such that the number of side chains per 1000 carbon atoms in the composition is 0.2 to 5.0 on the average, and having an intrinsic viscosity [η] of at least 5 dℓ/g as the entire composition, wherein the strongly drawn body has at least two crystal melting endothermic peaks, close to each other, in the region of temperatures higher by at least 15°C than the inherent crystal melting temperature (Tm) of the composition determined as the main melting endothermic peak at the second temperature elevation when measured in the restrained state by a differential scanning calorimeter.

A one-pot methodology has been developed for the preparation of macrocyclon mimics, i.e., calix[8]arenes containing hydrophobic alkyl substituents on the upper rim and hydrophilic polyethylene glycol chains on the lower rim. Compounds containing PEG chains of up to 24 repeating ethylene oxide (EO) units can be prepared. With increasing molecular weight, these amphiphilic compounds can be classified as macromolecules, and can be difficult to characterise as single molecules. Compatibilized blends comprising a first phase comprising a thermoplastic olefin polymer and a second phase comprising a crosslinked, thermoplastic polyurethane are provided. The first phase is a continuous phase and the second phase can be co-5 continuous with the first phase, or dispersed as a non-continuous phase in the first phase. The blends further include a phenolic resole resin which at least partially crosslinks the thermoplastic polyurethane and acts as a compatibilizer for the olefin polymer and the thermoplastic polyurethane.
