    A process for the manufacture of a terphenyl compound [compound (T), herein after] of formula (T): wherein each of R and R', equal to or different from each other, are selected from the group consisting of halogen, alkyl, aryl, ether, thioether, ester, amide, imide, alkali or alkaline earth metal sulfonate, alkyl sulfonate, alkali or alkaline earth metal phosphonate, alkyl phosphonate, amine and quaternary ammonium; - each of j' and k, equal to or different from each other, are zero or are an integer from 1 to 4, including the steps of (i) reacting at least one organozinc compound of formula (I) with at least one dihalocompound of formula (II) in the presence of a catalyst compound; wherein Y is selected from the group consisting of a chloride, a bromide, an iodide, an alkanesulfonate or a fluoroalkanesulfonate anion, R2 is selected from selected from the group consisting of C1-C10-alkyl, C3-C10-cycloalkyl, C1-C10-halooalkyl and C3-C10 halocyclo alkyl, each of Z, equal to or different from each other, are selected from the group consisting of a chloride, a bromide, an iodide, an alkanesulfonate or a fluoroalkanesulfonate anion; (ii) a Bayer-Villiger oxidation and (iii) hydrolysis or alcoholysis.

    To achieve the object of providing a new method of manufacturing 4,4″-dihydroxy-m-terphenyl, the present invention provides a method of manufacturing 4,4″-dihydroxy-m-terphenyl expressed by General Formula (4) below, characterized in that such method uses a 2-cyclohexene-1-one expressed by General Formula (1) below or 3-hydroxycyclohexane-1-one expressed by General Formula (2) below, and phenol expressed by General Formula (3) below as materials and implements Step (A), Step (B), and Step (C) below, in this order, or Step (D) and Step (C) below, in this order: (In the formulas, each R 2 independently represents an alkyl group, alkoxy group, aromatic hydrocarbon group, or halogen atom, while m independently indicates 0 or an integer of 1 to 4, where R 2 substitution does not occur in the third position when m is 1 or greater, and when m is 2 or greater, R 2 's may be identical or different, and R 2 substitution does not occur in two positions of the same carbon atom.
