    The invention relates to hydrophilic transparent homopolymers and cross-linked copolymers, methods for their production, and the respective monomers. Hydrophilic copolymers can be prepared by copolymerization of monomers of general formula la wherein R is hydrogen or methyl, eventually with monomers of general formula Ila wherein R is hydrogen or methyl, and X is O-CH2-CH2-OH, O-CH2-CH(OH)-CH3, O-CH2-CH(OH)-CH2-OH, (O-CH2-CH2)2OH, (O-CH2-CH2)3OH, O-CnH2n+1 with n = 1 to 16, NH2, NH-CH2-CH(OH)-CH3, N(C2H5)2, NH-t-C4H9, OH, ONa, OK, or ONH4. The content of monomers of formulae la and Ila is preferably 40 to 99.99 %, wherein at least 5 % are monomers of general formula I. The copolymers are preferably cross-linked with 0.01 to 60 % of a cross-linking agent having at least two olefinic double bonds, in the presence of radical initiators. The polymers are optimally suited for soft contact lenses and medical purposes.

    The invention provides non-aqueous compositions comprising film forming polymers comprising repeating units derived from: (a) at least one monomer comprising at least one functionalized or unfunctionalized acryloyl moiety and at least one lactam moiety; (b) at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of functionalized and unfunctionalized C1-C7 alkyl (alk)acrylates, C1-C7 alkyl (alk)acrylamides, and combinations thereof; and (c) at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of functionalized and unfunctionalized C8-C60 alkyl (alk)acrylates, C8-C60 (alk)alkyl acrylamides, and combinations thereof. The invention further provides applications of these compositions in various industrial arts, particularly in personal care. The invention furthermore provides water-resistant non-aqueous personal care compositions. Variables a, b and c are described herein.

    Disclosed herein is a personal care conditioning and/or styling composition for keratin substrate comprising: (A) at least one conditioning and/or styling copolymer obtained from polymerizing: (i) about 0.1 wt. % to 99.9 wt. % of at least one cationic or pseudo-cationic monomer selected from the group consisting of acrylamidopropyl trimethylammonium chloride (APT AC) and/or diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DADMAC); and (ii) about 0.1 wt. % to 99.9 wt. % of at least one monomer comprising at least one functionalized or unfunctionalized acryloyl moiety and at least one lactam moiety; (B) at least one cosmetically acceptable excipient; and (C) optionally, at least one effective amount of personal care active ingredient. Also disclose is a process for preparing such composition and method of use thereof.
