  8-Vinylquinoline and alpha-methyl-8-vinylquinoline have been prepared in 40-67% overall yield from 8-methyl- and 8-ethyl-quinoline, respectively. These unsaturated compounds undergo nucleophilic addition with carbon and oxygen nucleophiles at the terminal vinyl carbon atom in the presence of Pd-II compounds affording, exclusively, five-membered metallacyclic rings.
