Reactions of copper(II) salts with the ligand 1,2-bis(2-pyridylsulfanylmethyl)benzene (L-1) and the isomeric ligands 1,2,3,4-tetrakis(2-pyridylsulfanylmethyl)benzene (L-2) and 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(2-pyridylsulfanylmethyl)benzene (L-3) give copper(II) complexes, some of which have been characterised by X-ray crystallography. [Cu(L-1)Cl-2] is found to be a one-dimensional coordination polymer, containing two subtly different copper atom environments. By contrast, [Cu-2(L-2)Cl-4] and [Cu-2(L-3)(NO3)(4)] are discrete species with, in each case, the copper atoms chelated by adjacent ligand arms. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
