    The invention relates to carboxylic acids and derivatives thereof and pharmaceutical compound containing them. The active compounds are represented by the formula compound represented by formula I, wherin R 1 -R 4 each independently represents an unsubstituted or substituted hydrocarbyl or heterocyclyl radical, Q represents a diradical consisting of a linear chain of 11 to 18 carbon atoms, one or more of which may be replaced by heteroatoms, said chain being optionally substituted by inert substituents and one or more of said carbon or heteroatom chain members optionally forming part of a ring structure, and where one or both of de carboxyl groups can be substituted by an in vitro hydrolyzable physiologically acceptable substituent; with the proviso that: compounds wherein R 1 -R 4 each represents CH 3 and Q represents a linear chain of 14 carbons, are excluded; and compounds wherein Q represents a linear chain of carbon atoms one of which is replaced by oxygen or sulfur, are excluded. 1

    An aqueous paint which exhibits improved dispersion property in water and dispersion stability, has a low viscosity enabling the painting operation to be efficiently carried out, and cures at low temperatures within short periods of time to form a coating which after curing exhibits a high degree of workability, high corrosion resistance, and low degree of elution. The aqueous paint comprises an epoxy acrylate resin prepared by modifying, with a (meth)acrylic monomer, a copolymerized epoxy resin having a number average molecular weight of 8,000 to 15,000 and containing, as phenolic components, a bisphenol-A component and a bisphenol-F component at a molar ratio of from 5:5 to 8:2, and a curing agent of a thermosetting resin having a methylol group. The paint is particularly useful for coating metal cans.

    The compounds of this invention are suitable matting agents for coatings. The compounds are amide-containing condensation products optionally comprising at least one β-hydroxyalkylamide functional group and, for example, are prepared from monomeric amides, oligomeric polyamides or polymeric polyamides bearing β-hydroxyalkylamide groups by reacting the hydroxyalkylamide bearing amide with another compound such that at least one reactive functional group other than β-hydroxyalkylamide is also present on the condensation product, and further such that 50% or more of the terminal β-hydroxyalkylamide functionality has been reacted or converted to groups containing terminal carboxylic acid groups or other reactive groups including, but not limited to, groups reactive with polymers and crosslinkers suitable for preparing epoxy, epoxy-polyester, polyester, polyester acrylic, polyester-primid, polyurethane or acrylic coatings. Other embodiments of the invention comprise the combination of the aforementioned condensation product with inorganic solids such as silicas and aluminas, and/or matte activators.
