  The synthesis is described of the monoethyl ester chlorides of (S)- and (R)-methyl benzyloxy malonic acid which are intermediates in the synthesis of ergotamine. Their absolute configuration was determined by linking the levorotatory antipode with S-(+)-citramalic acid.
