A new photo-active rhenium(I) bipyridyl based rotaxane has been synthesised which by virtue of the unique interlocked structural cavity selectively senses hydrogensulfate using luminescence spectroscopy.

The first example of assembling novel heteronuclear lanthanideâtransition metal pseudorotaxanes where interpenetration of the lanthanide stoppered thread into the transition metal sensitiser containing macrocycle is signalled via sensitised near-infrared (NIR) lanthanide luminescence is described.
