  Es wird ein neues Verfahren zur Herstellung von 6-Methylen-Δ4-3-keto-steroiden der allgemeinen Teilformel I wonn R Wasserstoff, Acyloxy und Alkoxy mit bis zu 6 C-Atomen und R' das CD-Ringskelett von Steroiden der Androstan- und Pregnanreihe durch Umsetzung von entsprechenden Δ4-3-Keto-steroiden mit einem Formaldehydderivat der Formel wooel X Alkoxy und Y Alkyl mit bis zu 5 C-Atomen bedeuten, wenn n = 1 ist, oder X und Y eine C-O-Einfachbindung bedeuten, wenn n = 3 ist oder X Hydroxy und Y Wasserstoff bedeuten, wenn n eine ganze Zahl in der Größenordnung von 100-1000 ist, in einem inerten Lösungsmittel mit einem Kondensationsmittel bei Temperaturen von 0―80° C beschrieben. Die erfindungsgemäß herstellbaren Verbindungen sind Ausgangsstoffe zur Herstellung von 6-Methylsteroiden.

  A process for preparing a 6-methylene-.DELTA..sup.4 -3-keto steroid of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen, alkoxy of up to 6 carbon atoms or acyloxy of up to 6 carbon atoms wherein the acyl group is that of a carboxylic acid, and R' is the CD-ring system of a steroid of the androstane or pregnane series, comprising reacting the corresponding .DELTA..sup.4 -3-keto steroid of the formula ##STR2## with a formaldehyde derivative of the formula X(CH.sub.2 O).sub.n Y wherein n is 1, 3 or an integer on the order of 100-1000, and X is C.sub.1-5 alkoxy and Y is C.sub.1-5 alkyl when n is 1, X and Y represent a single bond between the terminal C atom and the terminal O atom when n is 3, and X is hydroxy and Y is hydrogen when n is an integer on the order of 100-1000, in an inert solvent in the presence of a condensation agent which is a strong acid a strongly acidic cation exchanger or a phosphoric acid derivative.

  The reaction of 21-bromo-3β-hydroxy-17α-methoxypregn-5-en-20-one (5) with NaOCH3 in MeOH under reflux gave the 21-aldehyde 9 in modest yield along with the 21-hydroxy derivative 6. The 21-acetates 8 and 13 were obtained in good yields by prolonged reaction of the 21-bromides 5 and 11 with CH3COO-.
