Collective total syntheses of 10 benzo[c]phenanthridines were achieved on the basis of the construction of rings C and B through sequential transition metal-catalyzed reactions and flexible condition-controlled Mannich reaction via three pots in 25–34% yields, which provided an efficientroute to benzo[c]phenanthridines via a pot-economic approach.

Drug delivery devices and techniques are described for use in treatment of periodontal disease and the like. The delivery device includes benzo (c) phenanthridine alkaloid in a bioerodable and biocompatible material. The alkaloid is slowly released from the bioerodable material in the oral cavity. The bioerodable material may be polymeric and may be natural or synthetic. The delivery device may be inserted subgingivally (e.g., in a periodontal pocket) where the alkaloid is released slowly over a period of days.
A method for extracting valuable alkaloid materials from plants containing the same comprising slurrying the comminuted plant material in a mixture of water and a cosolvent at a pH of 8.5, adding a nonpolar, water-insoluble, solvent to dissolve the alkaloid, washing the nonpolar phase with acidulated water to convert the alkaloid to the imminium ion or acid salt form, precipitating the alkaloid, and recovering and drying the alkaloid.
Mouthrinses containing sanguinarine of superior efficacy and increased uptake into dental plaque are attained by the development of stable mouthrinses adjusted to a pH in the range of 4.0 to 5.6, preferably about 4.5. Compositions may contain a zinc salt as an optional ingredient. Various types of buffer systems are described.
