  Novel purine derivatives of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 3 carbon atoms, R.sup.2 is alkyl of 1 to 3 carbon atoms or allyl, and R.sup.3 and R.sup.4, respectively, mean halogen, and their acid addition salts are provided. These compounds have anticoccidial activity and are useful for treating caecal and/or intestinal coccidiosis in poultry and domestic animals.

  6-Substituted amidino-9-substituted benzyl purine derivatives of the formula where each of R,, R2 and R3 independently of the others, is a hydrogen atom or a C1-6 alkyl radical and each of R4 and Rs, which are the same or different, is a halogen atom, are novel. The compounds are active anticoccidial agents and may be administered to poultry, usually in suitable compositions, for the prevention of coccidiosis. The compounds may be made by a number of methods.
