Fluid, stable polymer-polyols are provided which consist of an organic polyol medium and an interpolymer of a minor amount of polymerized ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride, such as maleic acid anhydride, and a major amount of at least one different polymerized ethylenically unsaturated monomer, the interpolymer being in the form of particles that are stably dispersed in the polyol. Polyurethane foams produced from these polymer/ polyols display improved load bearing and compression set when compared with polymer/polyols produced in a similar manner without the ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride: elastomers so produced have improved tensile modulus and tear properties.

Curable molding compositions comprising a mixture of:
I. from about 25 to about 90 weight percent of a thermosetting resin containing:
(a) from about 5 to about 95 weight percent of a polyester resin derived from the reaction of a poly(acrylate) and a vinyl monomer, said poly(acrylate) and vinyl monomer essentially free from functional groups reactive with the polyol of the polyisocyanate of (b);
(b) from about 95 to about 5 weight percent of a polyurethane derived from the reaction of a saturated polyol and a polyisocyanate, said polyol and polyisocyanate free from unsaturated groups capable of copolymerizing with the poly(acrylate) or vinyl monomer of (a); and
II. from about 75 to about 10 weight percent of one or more fibers with a melting point or a glass transition temperature above about 130°C; wherein (b) constitutes less than 40 weight percent of (I) and (II). These compositions are especially suited to produce thermoset fiber-reinforced molded articles by rapid injection molding techniques.

Polyisocyanurate polymers are prepared by polymerization of polyisocyanates in organic solvents employing trimerization catalysts. The polyisocyanates are reacted with halogenated alcohols subsequent to polymerization. These polymers may be dispersed in polyols for the preparation of cellular and non-cellular polyurethane products having improved flame retardant physical properties.

Polyisocyanurate polymers are prepared by polymerization of polyisocyanates in organic solvents employing trimerization catalysts. The polyisocyanates are reacted with monofunctional active hydrogen compounds prior to polymerization or subsequent to the polymerization. These polymers may be dispersed in polyols for the preparation of cellular and non-cellular polyurethane products having improved physical properties.

This invention relates to normally liquid, stable polymer/ polyol compositions formed by polymerizing, in the presence of a free radical catalyst, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer or monomers dissolved or dispersed in a polyol mixture including a coupled polyol consisting of the reaction product of a polyol having a functionality in excess of 2 reacted with a polyisocyanate in such proportion that the ratio of hydroxyl groups to isocyanato groups is greater than 1. In one embodiment, the coupled polyol is made in situ in the base polyol by addition thereto of the required amount of the polyisocyanate. The novel polymer/polyol compositions are convertible to polyurethane foams and elastomers.
