    A library of 25 10-unsubstituted and 10-bromo or 10-acetoxy 3-alkyl-5-methylene-2(5H)-furanones and two 3-alkylmaleic anhydrides was synthesized using existing and new methods. This library was tested for the antagonistic effect against the biofilm formation by Salmonella Typhimurium and the quorum sensing regulated bioluminescence of Vibrio harveyi. The length of the 3-alkyl chain and the bromination pattern of the ring structure were found to have a major effect on the biological activity of the 10-unsubstituted furanones. Remarkably, the introduction of a bromine atom on the 10 position of the 3-alkyl chain did drastically enhance the activity of the furanones in both biological test systems. The introduction of an acetoxy function in this position did in general not improve the activity. Finally, the potential of the (bromo) alkylmaleic anhydrides as a new and chemically easily accessible class of biofilm and quorum sensing inhibitors was demonstrated. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd.     A liquid polyester obtainable by reacting a cyclic acid anhydride (A) comprising at least 10 mol% of one of specific alkyl or alkenyl substituted cyclic acid anhydrides with an epoxy compound (B) in a molar ratio of (A):(B) of 10:8 - 10:12, optionally in the presence of a dry or semi-dry partially saponified fat and oil having a saponification ratio of 5 to 90%. The liquid polyesters contain preferably ethylenical unsaturation and may be used in film-forming materials.

    This invention discloses a composite resin prepared by reacting a monool (a) containing a C25-200 hydrocarbon group; a multifunctional compound (G) containing a functional group capable of reacting with a hydroxyl group of the monool (a); and a compound (H) having a functional group capable of reacting with the functional group in the multifunctional compound (G) , as well as uses thereof. The composite resin of the invention serves as an excellent interface modifier upon incorporation into a film-coating material such as ink or paint or into a molding material. The modifier can modify not only the interface between the film-forming material or the like and abase material but also the surf ace of the film-formingmaterial, that is, the interface between the film-forming material and the air.

    A separator for a rechargeable battery includes a porous substrate and an adhesive layer on at least one surface thereof. The adhesive layer includes a first binder, a second binder, and a filler. The first binder includes a structural unit derived from vinylidene fluoride and a structural unit derived from hexafluoropropylene. The structural unit derived from hexafluoropropylene is included in an amount of about 10 wt % or less based on a total weight of the first binder. A weight average molecular weight of the first binder ranges from about 800,000 to about 1,500,000. The second binder includes a structural unit derived from vinylidene fluoride and a structural unit derived from hexafluoropropylene. The structural unit derived from hexafluoropropylene is included in an amount of 10 wt % or less based on a total weight of the second binder. A weight average molecular weight of the second binder is 600,000 or less.

    A coating composition includes a flexible hyperbranched polyol preparable by (a) reacting a polyol comprising at least three hydroxyl groups with an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid having from 6 to 36 carbon atoms or an esterifiable derivative of the aliphatic dicarboxylic acid to form a hydroxyl-functional first intermediate product; (b) reacting the first intermediate product with a cyclic carboxylic acid anhydride to form a carboxylic acid-functional second intermediate product; and (c) reacting the second intermediate product with an epoxide-functional compound having one epoxide group to form the hyperbranched polyol. The coating composition may be cured to a coating layer having excellent flexibility.
