A method of making a monomer solution of styrene sulfonic acid or the pyridine salt of styrene sulfonic acid or mixtures of both in an organic solvent, said solution being suitable for producing cation exchange membranes. The method comprises the steps of dissolving a metal salt of styrene sulfonate in said organic solvent and pyridinium styrene sulfonate. The mixture solution is reacted under conditions that generate a salt byproduct precipitate and the reactant product solution is collected. Embodiments of the present invention provide for cation exchange membranes and processes for their manufacture. Membranes made by the processes described herein combine low resistance and high permselectivity which make them highly effective for membrane components in desalination of water by electrodialysis (ED), as a power generating sources in reverse electrodialysis and as separators in fuels cells.

A polymer prepared from monomers A, Band C in random recurring units wherein:
A is an acrylonitrile monomer;
B is a hydrophobic ethylenically unsaturated monomer;
C is an ionically charged vinyl monomer;
A being from 10 to 90 weight percent of said polymer;
B being from 5 to 40 weight percent of said polymer except that when B is a vinyl halide monomer, B is 10 to 89.9 weight percent of said polymer; and
C being from 0.1 to 10 weight percent of said polymer. The polymer is useful in preparing latex compositions that can be coated on photographic elements as protective overcoats.

There are disclosed a styrenic block copolymer having a reduced viscosity of 0.01 to 20 dl/g (0.05 g/l in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene at 135°C) which comprises highly syndiotactic styrenic-polymer segments and 10⁻⁴ to 10 mol% of heteroatom-containing styrenic polymer segments; a resin composition comprising the above styrenic block copolymer and a thermoplastic resin, an inorganic filler or an organic filler; a multi-layer material comprising at least one layer composed of the above styrenic block copolymer or the above resin composition; and a process for producing the above styrenic block copolymer which comprises polymerizing a styrenic monomer in the presence of a specific catalyst and adding a heteroatom-containing styrenic monomer to successively proceed with copolymerizaiton reaction. The above-disclosed styrenic block copolymer and the resin composition exhibit excellent compatibiity and adhesivenesss, and the multi-layer material is expected to find a wide range of applications in automobile parts, electrical and electronic parts as well as film, sheet, etc.
