    Novel non-linear optical, piezoelectric, pyroelectric, waveguide, and other materials are presented together with processes for their employment and articles formed thereby. Such materials, processes and articles comprise diacetylenes and polymers formed from diacetylenic species, which polymers are amenable to close geometric, steric, structural, and-electronic control. Accordingly, it is now possible to design, formulate and employ new diacetylenic species and polymers formed therefrom to provide non-linear optic, waveguide, piezoelectric, and pyroelectric materials and devices having surprising efficiencies and degrees of effect. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, diacetylenes which are crystallizable into crystals. having a non-centrosymmetric unit cell may form single crystals or may be elaborated into a thin film upon a substrate by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. Such films may, optionally, be polymerized either thermally or by irradiation for use in non- linear optical and other systems. According to other prefered embodiments, diacetylenes are covalently bonded to substrates through the employment of silane species and subsequently polymerized to yield non-linear optic and other devices having high structural integrity in addition to high efficiencies and effects.

    This invention provide a novel photoresistive article having significantly improved properties of resultion when used as a photoresist. The article comprising a substrate and a layer carried by said substrate of a photopolymerizable composition which layer comprises at least one material having at least two acetylenic bonds, at least two of said bonds being in conjugation with one another and having a plurality of discrete domains. In one embodiment of the invention, within the discrete domain, a majority of the molecules of the material are oriented in an irregular array. The domains may have an average dimension of less than 10,000 angstom units and provides enhanced resolution of micro-structural lines in an image projected thereon.

    Novel waveguides employing diacetylenes are present together with processes for their production. Such articles comprise diacetylenes and polymers formed from diacetylenic species, which polymers are amendable to close geometric, steric, structural, and electronic control. Accordingly, it is now possible to design formulate and employ new diacetylenic waveguideing polymers to provice non-linear optic, devices having surprising efficiencies. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, diacetylenes which are crystallizable into crystals having a non-centro-symmetric unit cell may form single crystals or may be elaborated into a thin film upon a substrate by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. Such films may, optionally, be polymerized either thermally or by irradiation for use. According to other preferred embodiments, diacetylenes are covalently bonded to substrates through the employment of silane species and subsequently polymerized to yield non- linear optic devices having high structural integrity in addition to high efficiencies and effects.
