A photographic element comprising a support having thereon at least one layer comprising a polymer obtained by copolymerizing a repeating unit represented by the following general formula (I) and a copolymerizable cellulose derivative represented by the following general formula (II):
wherein A represents a repeating unit derived from an ethylenically unsaturated monomer having -COOH group, -SO3H group or -PO(OH)2 group in the molecular structure; and B represents a repeating unit derived from a copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer;
wherein (R1)s each independently represents (i) a hydrogen atom, (ii) a monovalent organic bonding group such as an ester group or an ether group or (iii) a monovalent organic bonding group represented by the following general formula (III), with the proviso that (R1)s do not all hydrogen atom at the same time; and n represents a number of 20 to 800;
wherein R2 represents hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; and L represents a bivalent organic bonding group, and wherein the percentage by weight of the component represented by general formula (I) in the copolymer is from 5 to 95; the percentage by weight of the component represented by general formula (III) based on the weight of the component represented by general formula (II) is from 0.00001 to 10; x and y represent each the percentage by weight of each monomer component in the copolymer and x is in the range of 1 to 95 and y is in the range of 5 to 99.

Dispersions of an aqueous carrier medium, an insoluble particle, and a graft copolymer dispersant having backbone and side chain portions wherein both portions are prepared from ethylenically unsaturated monomers and either the backbone or sidechain portion is hydrophilic and the other portion is hydrophobic. In a preferred embodiment, the dispersion is formulated as an ink that exhibits excellent resistance to flocculation and provides images with a high color strength and gloss when used in a thermal ink jet printer.
A non-ionic graft copolymer has a hydrophobic backbone and non-ionic, hydrophilic side chains having a molecular weight of at least 500, preferably 100-2000 is substantially insoluble in water, but soluble in an aqueous vehicle, and is particularly suited for use in aqueous coating compositions in which water comprises no more than 80% by weight of the vehicle for the composition.
Water insoluble non-ionic graft copolymers having a hydrophobic backbone comprising adhesion promoting monomers selected from the group consisting of beta-diketone monomers and ureido monomers, and at least two hydrophilic side chains each attached at a terminal end to the backbone and each comprising polyethylene oxide macromonomers are suitable for use as binders in aqueous coating compositions contain an aqueous vehicle having from 50% to 80% by weight water, at least one water soluble or water miscible organic co-solvent; and wherein the binder is soluble in the aqueous vehicle but substantially insoluble in water and are particularly well suited for use as ink jet inks for direct printing to vinyl or other hydrophobic substrates.
