A simple strategy was studied for the reversible nucleophilic addition of secondary alcohols to carbonyl-based receptors to form hemiacetals. It Involves the in situ binding of neighboring Bronsted and Lewis acids activators. The addition reaction was successfully observed by UV-vis spectroscopy, thereby laying the groundwork for alcohol optical sensor design.
