malondlaldehyde Is capable of modifying aminoacid residues to novel, highly fluorescent 1,4-dihydropyridines. The structures assigned to these compounds are supported by UV, HRMS, high-field NMR, and X-ray crystallographic data. The mechanism of these transformations, which Is fully discussed, involves the Michael reaction of alkylidene malondialdehydes with enaminals, both of which are produced as detectable
