还原染料是一种需要经过还原才能进行染色的染料类型。这类染料不溶于水,分子中含有两个或更多的羰基,在保险粉的碱性溶液作用下,这些羰基会被还原成羟基,从而使染料溶解在碱液中,进而对纤维素产生亲和力并上染纤维。随后通过空气或氧化剂的作用,染料再次恢复为不溶性的状态,牢固地固着于纤维之上。
还原染料主要分为两大类:蒽醌染料与靛类染料,其中以蒽醌染料种类较多。这类染料以其极高的牢度著称,并拥有丰富的色彩和鲜艳的色泽(仅次于碱性染料),适用于棉、麻及粘胶纤维的染色与印花。然而,由于还原过程需要强碱,它并不适合用于羊毛或丝等蛋白质纤维的染色,且匀染性能较差。
为解决这些问题,某些还原染料可以被制备成稳定的可溶硫酸酯形式,在水中上染后通过稀酸水解并再次氧化以固着在纤维上。这类染料称为可溶性还原染料。使用过程中无需强碱,能够染色包括羊毛和丝在内的蛋白质纤维,并且匀染效果较好,但其价格较高,仅适用于中浅色的染色,难以获得深色。
还原染料拥有悠久的历史。早在汉代马王堆出土的麻织物上就发现了用植物性还原染料靛蓝进行染色的痕迹。后来从植物中的配糖体形式提取靛蓝,经过发酵、水解及氧化处理即可获得该染料。1870至1883年间,拜耳首次剖析了靛蓝的结构并实现了合成;1890年,欧曼提出了工业生产方法,并于同年由巴斯夫工厂开始批量生产靛蓝染料;到了1901年,波恩成功研发出重要的蓝色蒽醌还原染料——蓝蒽酮-阴丹士林。此后,硫靛、还原翠绿XBN等其他类型也开始被合成。到20世纪30年代,这类颜料的基本色种齐全,成为现代印染厂常用的重要染料之一。
尽管在活性染料出现后有一部分被取代,但还原染料依然是纤维素纤维纺织品染色和印花中不可或缺的染料品种,并且还能用于维纶及其他合成纤维的染色。
