By labelling with 18O it was shown that the reaction of the ester 3β-benzoyloxycholestene-(1) (I*) in an unpolar solvent on alumina to give the alcohol 3α-hydroxycholestene-(1) (II) occurs with alkyl-O-fission. The alcohol 3β-hydroxy-cholestene-( 1) (IV*) corresponding to I* remained practically unchanged under these conditions.
