The reaction of 2-cyclopentadienyl-2-indenylpropane, C5H5CMe2C9H7, with one equivalent of BuLi gives the anion [C5H4CMe2C9H7]-, that can be reacted with (eta5-C5H5)ZrCl3 to afford the metallocene dichloride (eta5-C5H5)(eta5-C5H4CMe2C9H7)ZrCl2 (1a). Reduction of la with sodium sand in the presence of PMe3 yields the pi-olefin complex (eta5-C5H5)(eta5:eta2-C5H4CMe2C9H7)Zr(PMe3) (2). In the presence of the isonitrile CN(t)Bu the reduction affords the corresponding complex (eta5-C5H5)(eta5:eta2-C5H4CMe2C9H7)Zr(CNtBu) (3). The reaction of 2 with HCI gas proceeds via an oxidative addition reaction to form (eta5-C5H5)(eta5:eta1-C5H4CMe2C9H8)ZrCl (4) and (eta5-C5H5)(eta5-C5H4CMe2C9H9)ZrCl2 (5). All products were characterized by H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy, and 2 also by an X-ray diffraction study.
