    A fully continuous process for the manufacture of 3-hydroxypropionitrile, which process comprises (a) an addition reaction where acrylonitrile and water are reacted in the presence of a weak base to form a reaction mixture of 3-hydroxypropionitrile, bis(cyanoethyl)ether and unreacted acrylonitrile, which mixture is continuously neutralised during the transfer to the second process step; and (b) a reactive distillation where the bis(cyanoethyl)ether contained in the reaction mixture is fragmented into 3-hydroxypropionitrile and acrylonitrile and the 3-hydroxypropionitrile is subsequently separated and isolated.

    A process for the production of 3-hydroxypropionitrile is provided. This process includes (a) reacting acrylonitrile with water at a defined molar ratio in the presence of a weak base under specific temperature and pressure conditions until a conversion in the range of about 40% to about 80% has been achieved; (b) after cooling the mixture obtained in (a), separating off its aqueous phase; (c) distilling off the acrylonitrile from the organic phase remaining after (b); (d) subjecting the mixture obtained in (c) to pyrolysis at specific temperature and pressure conditions in the presence of a basic catalyst to obtain a mixture consisting mainly of 3-hydroxypropionitrile and acrylonitrile; and (e) isolating the desired 3-hydroxypropionitrile by fractional distillation from the mixture obtained in (d). Such a process in which the basic aqueous phase and the acrylonitrile that has been distilled off are recycled represents a preferred embodiment.

    This invention relates to an improved hydrogenation process for the preparation of etheramines. In the process, cyanoethylated alcohols, i.e., the reaction product of an alcohol with (meth)acrylonitrile, are contacted with hydrogen in the presence of a sponge cobalt catalyst. The improvement in the process resides in effecting the hydrogenation process utilizing a cyanoethylated alcohol feedstock contaminated with byproduct acrylonitrile and utilizing a solvent that solubilizes byproduct (meth)acrylonitrile present in the feedstock. Specific classes of solvents employed are ethers and amides.
