The Knoevenagel reaction between 2-hydroxybenzaldehydes and active methylene compounds (malononitrile and ethyl cyanoacetate) produces iminocoumarins and/or coumarins. A series of new N-chlorobenzopyran-2-imines were prepared in moderate to good yields, by reacting sodium hypochlorite in an acidic medium with benzopyran-2-imines obtained via the Knoevenagel condensation. Some of the N-chlorobenzopyran-2-imines obtained are potential antiproliferating agents. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Room temperature synthesis of benzo[b]pyran‐2‐imine derivatives via the Knoevenagel condensation of malononitrile and cyanoacetates with salicylaldehyde derivativesoverMgO and their transformation to the known coumarins is described.
