Abstract An antimicrobial sesquiterpene has been isolated from diffusates of damaged leaves of Rosa rugosa . Its structure, including relative stereochemistry, was deduced by chemical and spectroscopic (UV, IR, NMR and mass spectrometry) methods to be a novel carotane with an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde group, an endo -peroxide bridge and an allyl alcohol partial structure.
