In treatment of eyes contaminated with cationic dyes, first aid measures are aimed at getting rid of dye which has not yet reacted with the tissues. This includes copious irrigation, mechanical removal of particles, and in the case of imbedded colored pencil may necessitate surgical exploration and careful removal of the particles. Solutions of tannin or tannic acid precipitate cationic dyes and render them essentially noninjurious, but this disposes of only that portion of the dye which has not already reacted with the tissues. /It was/ determined experimentally that a 5% to 10% solution of tannin was effective essentially in a prophylactic sense if applied within three minutes following application of powdered basic dyes to the eyes of rabbits, but that the effectiveness of this treatment rapidly diminished after three minutes. Other forms of chemical treatment have been aimed at removing both combined and excess dye. However, studies of the reaction of cationic dyes with cornea in vitro have shown these dyes to bind very tenaciously and to be very difficult to remove from combination with the tissue. ... /Cationic dyes/

    A new isotope edited internal standard (IEIS) method for quantitative surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is demonstrated using rhodamine 6G (R6G-d0) and rhodamine 6G (R6G-d4) edited with deuterium. The reproducibility and accuracy of the IEIS method is investigated both under optical resonance (SERRS) and nonresonance (SERS) conditions. A batch-to-batch concentration measurement reproducibility of better than 3% is demonstrated over a concentration range of 200 pM−2 μM with up to a factor of 3 difference between the concentration of the analyte and its IEIS. The superior performance of the IEIS method is further illustrated by comparing results obtained using absolute SERS/SERRS intensity calibration (with no internal standard) or using adenine (rather than R6G-d4) as an internal standard for R6G concentration quantization. Potential biomedical gene expression and comparative proteomic applications of the IEIS method are discussed.

    A new fluorescent probe was synthesized from rhodamine-6G and 6-(hydroxymethyl) picolinohydrazide for the sensing of Fe3+ in an aqueous environment. The structure of the sensor was confirmed through its single crystal X-ray study. It exhibits a high specificity and sensitivity towards Fe3+ over other interfering heavy and transition metal ions (HTM). The turn-on greenish-yellow fluorescence and a colorimetric change from colourless to pink were observed upon addition of Fe3+ which evokes almost 116- and 23-fold enhancement in absorbance and emission intensity respectively in an acetonitrile–water (1 : 1, v/v, 25 °C) solution at a neutral pH (pH = 7.2). The Fe3+ promoted ring opening of the spirolactam framework to the open chain amide platform of the sensor is responsible for its visible colour change and turn-on fluorescence activity. It also exhibits an excellent performance in the “dip stick” method. Moreover the limit of detection of the probe is in the 10−8 M range.
