Regeneration of α-Haloaldehydes from α-Halodimethylacetals

Alpha-Chlorodimethylacetals are hydrolysed in a mixture of acetic acid and aq. HCI (3.5 M) to alpha-chloroaldehydes in excellent yields. On replacing HCI by HBr the same procedure is applied to alpha-bromodimethylacetals.

α-Hydroxyaldehyde dimethylacetals are prepared efficiently by conversion of α-haloaldehyde dimethylacetals into α-haloaldehyde hemiacetal acetates and subsequent methanolysis promoted by lithium methoxide.

The orientation of the radical addition of N-chloroamides (ZCONHCl) to enolethers was studied as a function of Z and the enolether structure and compared with the orientation of radical addition of thioacetic acid and the orientation of typical electrophilicadditions.

alpha-Chloroacetals am obtained in almost quantitative yields, by treating acetals with MnO2-trimethylchlorosilane in CH3OH:CH3CN (1:1). The halogenation is explained by a ligand-transfer process on an enolether intermediate, mediated by a Mn(IV)-chloride species.
