  A new method is developed for the synthesis of 2-substituted 2-oxo-1,2 lambda (5)-thiaphospholanes and thiaphosphorinanes (thiolphostones) on the basis of intramolecular Pishchimuka rearrangement of thiophosphonic and thiophosphinic esters with omega -chloroalkyl substituentsat the phosphorus atom. Intermediate compound in the Pishchimuka rearrangement, 2-ethyl-2-ethoxy-1,2 lambda (4)-thiaphospholanium perchlorate, was isolated.

  Treatment of 5-deoxy-5-iodo-1,2-O-isopropylidene-β-O-methyl-α-D-xylofuranose with ethyl phenylphosphinothioate in the presence of sodium hydride, followed by the reduction with sodium dihydrobis(2-methoxyethoxy)aluminate, and then with 0.5 M HCl–EtOH gave the title compounds, which were characterized as the 1,2,4-O-triacetates.
