    Reaction of 1,4-cyclohexanedione with a variety of aldehydes in the presence of metal halides generated the 2-alkylated 1,4-benzenediols in good yields without any aromatic by-products.

    Photographic recording material containing polymers which coordinate with metal ions, complexes produced thereby and novel polymers are disclosed. The recording material comprises a support, a photosensitive silver halide emulsion layer, an image dye or dye-forming material and a layer containing a dye mordant. The mordant layer has associated therewith a source of metal ions and a polymer which is capable of forming a complex with metal ions. The complex provides improved light stability to image dyes. The image dyes are preferably dye ligands or dye ligand forming materials.
