    A large number of new liquid crystals incorporating the 2,5-disubstituted thiophene ring have been prepared and their mesomorphic behaviour studied in order to systematically investigate the correlation between the molecular structure and mesomorphism of thiophene derivatives with different shapes, polarisability and polarity. As a consequence of these investigations we have prepared a new class of liquid crystals incorporating a 2,5-disubstituted thiophene ring and a conjugated trans-carbon–carbon double bond in the terminal chain. These novel thiophene derivatives are the first liquid crystals incorporating a 2,5-disubstituted thiophene ring to exhibit a nematic phase at room temperature. This enables the flexoelectric coefficients of a bent-shaped molecule to be measured directly and at room temperature for the first time to the authors' knowledge. Many of these new thiophenes exhibit a high birefringence and a high nematic clearing point and are of potential use as components of nematic mixtures in LCDs.

    Polymerizable tolanes of formula I wherein P, Sp, X, n, A1, A2, Z1, Z2, m1, m2, L1, L2, r and R have the meanings defined herein, polymerizable liquid crystal compositions comprising at least one compound of formula I, linear or crosslinked liquid crystal polymers obtainable from these compounds and compositions, are suitable for use in optical elements such as polarizers, retardation and compensation films, alignment layers, color filters or holographic elements. They are also suitable for use in liquid crystal displays such as PDLC, polymer gel or polymer stabilized cholesteric texture (PSCT) displays, as well as for use in adhesives, synthetic resins with anisotropic mechanical properties, cosmetics, diagnostics or liquid crystal pigments, for decorative and security applications, and for nonlinear optics or optical information storage.

    A polymerizable liquid crystal composition includes a liquid crystal compound having a polymerizable group, wherein the composition includes from 0.1 to 6.0% by weight of a (meth)acrylic copolymer (H), which 1) has a side chain containing a fluorine group, and a side chain containing a group represented by a general formula (h): 2) has a fluorine group content of 3 to 30% by weight, 3) has a ratio of side chains containing the group represented by the general formula (h) relative to the combined total of all side chains that falls within a range from 9 to 95 mol %, and 4) has a weight average molecular weight within a range from 10,000 to 300,000.

  • Nematic Liquid Crystals with a Trifluoromethyl Group

    We have synthesised a new class of compounds incorporating a trifluoromethyl group in the terminal alkoxy or alkenyloxy chain. Compounds containing several aromatic rings were synthesised with a view to producing compounds of high birefringence. This also included the synthesis of compounds containing a carbon-carbon triple bond. Compounds with three 1,4-disubstituted rings were synthesised in order to produce materials with a high nematic clearing point and as low a melting point as possible. Laterally fluoro-substituted compounds were prepared to generate a high positive value of the dielectric anisotropy, a low melting point and no smectic mesophases. Substances containing a cyclohexyl ring, which tend to induce a lower viscosity and compounds incorporating a bicyclo[2.2.2]octane ring were also synthesised in order to produce a high nematic clearing point and to influence the elastic constants. The (E)-trifluorobut-2-enyloxy-compounds were prepared in attempts to produce compounds with appropriate elastic constants and a high birefringence.
