New method of synthesis of tris(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium salts, 2,8,9-trihydroprotatranes X-[HN(CH2CH2OH)(3)](+), based on the reaction of tris(2-hydroxyethyl) amine (triethanolamine) with ammonium salts NH4X (X = F, Cl, Br, I, NO3, ClO4) was developed. H-1, C-13, N-15 NMR and IR spectra of these protatranes were investigated, as well as those of their analogs with X = RCH2COO (R = H; 2-MeC6H4O; 2-Me4ClC6H3O; 2-MeC6H4S; 4-ClC6H4S; 4-ClC6H4SO2; 3-IndS; 3-(PhCH2-IndS) prepared from the corresponding acids RCH2COOH and triethanolamine. The parameters of IR and NMR spectra of the studied protatranes were governed by the nature of substituent X, which also determined the character of the intra and intermolecular hydrogen bonds NH center dot center dot center dot O and OH center dot center dot center dot O in the protatrane framework.

Methods for making N2-phosphinyl amidine compounds, N2-phosphinyl amidinates, N2-phosphinyl amidine metal salt complexes, and N2-phosphinyl amidinate metal salt complexes are also disclosed. Catalyst systems utilizing the N2-phosphinyl amidine metal salt complexes and N2-phosphinyl amidinate metal salt complexes are also disclosed along with the use of the N2-phosphinyl amidine compounds, N2-phosphinyl amidinates, N2-phosphinyl amidine metal salt complexes, and N2-phosphinyl amidinate metal salt complexes for the oligomerization and/or polymerization of olefins.

A reversible liquid/solid phase change composition for storing thermal energy. The composition comprises at least one hydrated inorganic salt selected from a salt or mixture of salts that are subject to segregation of its chemical components during repeated freezing and thawing cycles, and a surface active thickening agent in the form of a cationic surfactant and selected from an amine, salts of the amine, or a quaternary ammonium salt of the amine, wherein the thickening agent is present in the hydrated salt in an amount sufficient to form a micelle structure throughout the hydrated salt to prevent such segregation.
