quenching of the BODIPY 1 in polar solvents is attributed to a population of a twisted charge transfer excited state (TICT) as the solvent polarity increases. Protonation of BODIPY 1 in polar media completely suppresses the formation of the TICT-state and leads to a significant increase of fluorescence intensity that makes this dye a very sensitive pH fluorescent sensor in the important spectral region
