  Hydroxyalkanals are produced by hydrating an unsaturated aldehyde in solution in the presence of a catalyst and an alcohol, preferably in an amount of 0.001 to 10 percent by weight with respect to the unsaturated aldehyde. The alcohol inhibits side reactions of the hydroxyalkanal resulting in high selectivity from a high-density unsaturated aldehyde solution.
