Michael Addition–Lactonization of Arylacetyl Phosphonate to β,γ-Unsaturated α-Keto Esters for the Synthesis of Chiral <i>syn</i>-3,4-Dihydropyranones and 5,6-Dihydropyranones
Catalytic asymmetric Michael addition–lactonization of arylacetyl phosphonates to β,γ-unsaturated α-ketoesters by a chiral bifunctional thiourea–tertiary amine was established. Using the developed protocol, a range of optically pure syn-3,4-dihydropyranones were generated in good yields with good to excellent stereoselectivities (up to >20:1 dr and 99% ee). simple ketones via diazocompounds, including diazo‐amides and ‐phosphonates, using a recyclable reagent in‐flow, are transient but versatile electrophiles for heteroatomalkylation reactions and for epoxide formation. The method produces no organic waste, with the only by‐products being water, KI and nitrogen, without the attendant hazards of isolation of intermediate diazocompounds.
Complexes of cyclic polyaza chelators with cations of alkaline earth metals for enhanced biological activity

Cyclic polyaza chelators that possess high affinity and specificity for first transition series metal cations exhibit an unanticipated improvement in biological activity when administered as complexes with cations of the alkaline earth metals, Ca(II) and Mg(II), most notably Ca(II). By virtue of this improvement, these complexes are particularly effective in the treatment of pathological conditions, including ischemia and ischemia-reperfusion injury.
Studies on Organophosphorus Compounds, 53: A New Procedure for the Synthesis of 1-Alkyl or 1-Aryl-1-hydroxy-2-nitroethylphoshonates under PTC Conditions
A series of dialkyl 1-alkyl- or 1-aryl-1-hydroxy-2-nitroethyl-phosphonates and 1-hydroxy-1-(nitromethyl)alkylphosphonates was prepared by nucleophilic addition of nitromethane to dialkyl acylphosphonates in the presence of potassium carbonate and tetrabutylammonium bromide.
