The influence of 1,3-oxazolidine and 1,3-oxathiolane fragments in substituted alkenes on the direction of their catalytic reaction with diazomethane has been investigated. The olefins bearing an oxazolidine substituent in the α- or γ-position and an oxathiolane substituent in the γ-position relative to the C=C bond react with diazomethane in the presence of Pd(acac)2 selectively resulting in cyclopropanation
The formation of alpha,beta-unsaturated oxathiolanes 2 from alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl derivatives was achieved selectively and in high yields using the heterogeneous catalyst APSG(.)HCI. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Tantalum(V) Chloride–Silica Gel: An Efficient Catalyst for Conversion of Carbonyl Compounds to 1,3‐Oxathiolanes
A variety of carbonyl compounds can be easily converted to the corresponding 1,3-oxathiolanes in the presence of a catalytic amount of tantalum(V) chloride [TaCl5] on silica gel in dichloromethane. Mild reaction conditions, efficiency, high yields, operational simplicity, and only 2.5 mol% of TaCl5 catalyst are some of the major advantages of the procedure.

Methods of inhibiting corrosion comprising the step of providing a corrosive environment; adding a corrosion inhibitor comprising a reaction product of a thiol compound and an aldehyde compound. Methods of acidizing a near well bore region of a subterranean formation comprising the steps of isolating a zone of interest along a well bore; and placing an acidizing solution the zone of interest wherein the acidizing solution comprises an acid and a corrosion inhibiting compound comprising the reaction product of a thiol compound and an aldehyde compound.
