A process for producing an asymmetric compound using a metal complex containing no rare earth metal element is disclosed. The process affords an optically active compound having high optical purity. Optically active binaphthol having the chemical formula ##STR1## and lithium aluminum hydride are reacted, or the optically active binaphthol, a dialkyl aluminum hydride, and a base containing an alkali metal (or a base containing alkaline earth metal) are reacted to prepare a metal complex comprising optically active binaphthol, aluminum, and alkali metal (or alkaline earth metal). This metal complex can be used as a catalyst to perform an asymmetric Michael reaction, an asymmetric phosphonylation reaction, or the like, to obtain, in a high yield, an asymmetric compound having high optical purity.

A multinuclear complex comprising a plurality of metal atoms and a ligand L coordinating to the metal atoms, and satisfying the following conditions (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv):
(i) The ligand L has a monovalent group represented by the following general formula (1) and/or a divalent group represented by the following general formula (2),
(ii) The ligand L has at least 5 coordination atoms bonding to the metal atom,
(iii) At least one of the coordination atoms bonds to two of the metal atoms, or the minimum number of covalent bonds between any two selected coordination atoms is 1-5, and

The present invention is directed to a specifically substituted tetrahydrofuran of the formula (I) ##STR1## wherein R.sup.4 is an alkylthio, alkylsulfinyl or alkylsulfonyl containing group, Y is an alkyl or substituted alkyl group, R.sup.6 is an alkyl or a substituted alkyl group and the substituents at positions 3, 4 or 5 are acyclic.

The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing an optically active menthol, including the following steps: A-1) asymmetrically hydrogenating at least one of geranial and neral to thereby obtain an optically active citronellal, B-1) conducting a ring-closure reaction of the optically active citronellal in the presence of an acid catalyst to thereby obtain an optically active isopulegol, and C-1) hydrogenating the optically active isopulegol to thereby obtain an optically active menthol.
