A compound of the formula
is useful in protecting organic materials normally subject to oxidative degradation. Among the products benefiting from the incorporation of this phenolic antioxidant are synthetic and natural rubbers, petroleum products and plastics, especially polyolefins such as polyethylene and polypropylene. The compound may be made by reacting 2,6-dichloro-9-thiabicyclo-(3,3,1) nonane with the sodium salt of 3(3,5,-di- tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propinicacid at60°C in dimethyl- sulpoxide solvent.

The title compound, the condensation product of sulfur dichloride and 1,5-cyclooctadiene, is a reliable acceptor of a wide variety of heteroatom nucleophiles, sometimes in reversible fashion. Optical resolution of the core structure has been achieved and preserved in succeeding transformations. The high reactivity and reliable stereochemical control afforded by this system illustrates the power of neighboring-group participation by the sulfur center.
