4,4-Dialkylallenyl nitriles and 2-aminopyridines give 2-alkyl-4-iminopyrido(1,2-a)pyrimidines as monohydrates in about 90% yield and 4-monoalkylallenyl nitriles similarly give 4-alkyl-2-imino(1,2-a)pyrimidines.

Hydrazine adds to allenic or acetylenic nitriles to give 3-alkyl-substituted 5-aminopyrazoles in excellent yields. Conjugated and unconjugated enaminic nitriles may be isolated from the Michael addition of phenylhydrazine to allenic nitriles and ring-closed to give 3-alkyl-5-amino-N-phenylpyrazoles and 3H-indoles.

The synthesis of imidazolines and imidazoles by double Michael addition of ethylene- or phenylene-diamines to allenic or acetylenic nitriles is described; enaminicnitriles from α-amino-acids, -esters, and -nitriles did not give pyrrolone derivatives.

Allenicnitriles react with 3-aminopyrazole in ethanol or dimethylformamide to give 5-alkyl-7-aminopyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidines 5 of pharmaceutical interest in good yields. 3-Phenylpropynenitrile reacts with 3-aminopyrazole in a similar manner to give the aryl compound 8.
