An optically active liquid crystal compound useful as a component of ferroelectric liquid crystal compositions and exhibiting ferroelectric properties within a broad temperature region including room temperature and a liquid crystal composition containing the compound are provided, which compound is an optically active phenylpyrimidine compound expressed by the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is a 1-18C alkyl group, n is an integer of 2-15 and C having * attached thereonto indicates an asymmetric carbon atom.
