  Detergent range alcohols and ketones are obtained by reacting an alkane having 10 to 18 carbon atoms with a hydroperoxide in the presence of catalysts which are trans­ition metal compounds selected from: (a) dicyano bis-(1,10)-phenanthrolene iron (II), (b) iron, ruthenium or chromium acetylacetonate, and (c) an iron, manganese or cobalt phthalocyanine or metallo-porphine.
