  The invention provides a light modulating material having at least a liquid crystal layer disposed between a pair of transparent electrodes. The liquid crystal layer has at least: a liquid crystal composition having at least one host liquid crystal having negative dielectric anisotropy and at least one dichroic dye; and at least one polymer material. The liquid crystal composition is vertically aligned when no voltage is applied, and the transmissivity of incident light of the light modulating material when no voltage is applied is higher than the transmissivity of incident light of the light modulating material when voltage is applied.
