  Verbindungen der Formel I und deren Komplexe mit Metallen oder Metallverbindungen, die keine Alkalimetalle oder Erdalkalimetalle bzw. keine Alkalimetall-oder Erdalkalimetallverbindungen sind, worin die Vinylgruppe in 4- oder 6-Stellung gebunden ist, R1 Wasserstoff, C1-6-Alkyl, C1-6-Alkoxy, Phenyl oder Phenoxy und R2 Wasserstoff oder Methyl bedeuten, mit der Maßgabe, daß eines von R1 und R2 ungleich Wasserstoff ist, wenn die Vinylgruppe in 6-Stellung gebunden ist. Die 2,2'-Bipyridinverbindungen (I) eignen sich zur Herstellung von komplexbildenden oder komplexierten, gegebenenfalls vernetzten Polymeren. Daraus erhältliche komplexierte Polymere finden z.B. Anwendung als Katalysatoren, besonders für Umvinylierungsreaktionen. Aus Verbindungen (I) herstellbare nicht-komplexierte Polymere eignen sich als Metallionen-Fänger bei verschiedenen Applikationen.

  Vinyl-substituted 2,2'-bipyridine compounds of the formula ##STR1## and complexes thereof with metals or metal compounds other than alkali metals or alkaline earth metals, or alkali metal compounds, or alkaline earth metal compounds are described, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 being as defined in patent claim 1 and the vinyl group being bonded in the 4-position or 6-position. The 2,2'-bipyridine compounds (I) are suitable for the preparation of complex-forming or complexed, crosslinked or uncrosslinked polymers. Complexed polymers, obtainable from these, are used, for example, as catalysts, in particular for transvinylation reactions. Uncomplexed polymers, which can be prepared from compounds (I), are suitable as metal ion scavengers in various applications.
