    A macromolecular emulsifier with switchable surface activity, and use thereof for preparation of polymer latex is disclosed. By using the macromolecular emulsifier with switchable surface activity as an emulsifier, a reversibly coagulable and re-dispersible polymer latex can be prepared by emulsion polymerization. The polymer latex can achieve the coagulation of latex particles by heating and aerating with nitrogen, air, inert gas and/or adding a small amount of alkali solution; the coagulated latex particles can be restored and re-dispersed into stable latex by aerating with carbon dioxide and/or adding a small amount of acid solution. The coagulation and re-dispersion process is reversible and is easy to control.

    Temporary wet strength resins, and paper products containing same, having a molecular weight of from about 20,000 to about 200,000, most preferably from about 30,000 to about 95,000, having the formula: wherein: A is and X is -0-, -NH-, or -NCH3-, and R is a substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic group; Yi and Y2 are independently -H, -CH3, or a halogen; W is a nonnucleophilic, water-soluble nitrogen heterocyclic moiety; and Q is a cationic monomeric unit. The mole percent of "a" ranges from about 30% to about 70%, preferably from about 45% to about 55%; the mole percent of "b" ranges from about 30% to about 70%, preferably from about 45% to about 55%; and the mole percent of "c" ranges from about 10/0 to about 400/0, most preferably from about 2% to about 8%.

    The present invention discloses a graft copolymer comprising an olefin polymer or a block copolymer, and an ionic group-containing polymer grafted to the olefin polymer or the block copolymer by a bridging group whose bridging chain has 4 or more atoms. The invention also discloses a process for producing the graft copolymer, which comprises reacting a radical polymerizable unsaturated compound (b) with a modified olefin polymer (a1) or a modified block copolymer (a2) to form a radical polymerizable olefin polymer (c1) or a radical polymerizable block copolymer (c2), the modified olefin polymer (a1) or the radical polymerizable block copolymer (c2) having a functional group selected from the group consisting of a hydroxyl group, a carboxyl group, an anhydrous carboxyl group, an epoxy group, and an isocyanate group, and the radical polymerizable unsaturated compound (b) having a functional group reactive with the above functional group; and then radical copolymerizing a radical polymerizable unsaturated compound (d) having an ionic group with the radical polymerizable olefin polymer (c1) or the radical polymerizable block copolymer (c2). When applied to a surface of a molded product of a thermoplastic resin or the like, the graft copolymer of the invention can impart coating properties, printing properties and antistatic properties to the molded product while maintaining sufficient adhesion to the molded product.
