    A photoinitiator is provided which exhibits excellent photosensitivity, yields colorless products, and is usable in thick layer UV curable coating. A novel chemical compound is also provided which is usable for the photoinitator. Photocurable composition is also provided which has these properties. The photoinitiator consists essentially of a compound having a molecular weight of 1000 or less, and having a chemical structure represented by the following formula (1), wherein R 3 and R 4 independently denote a specific alkyl group, and R 1 and R 2 independently denote an electron attracting group or a specific alkyl group, and weight percentage of a chemical structure element represented by the following formula (2), which is expressed in formula (1) based on the total molecular weight of the compound, is 17% to 54% by mass.

    A cured matter obtained by polymerizing and curing a polymerizable composition comprising a compound having at least one episulfide in a molecule is reduced in an odor by adding a perfume to the polymerizable composition comprising the compound having at least one episulfide in a molecule. A cloudiness of the lens is removed by raising a purity of sulfur to 98% or more. A reduction in a chlorine content of the sulfur compound described above to 0.1% by weight or less elevates an oxidation resistance and a light fastness of the high refractive index optical material and improves a color tone thereof. An optical product having a high refractive index and a high-degree transparency is provided by subjecting the composition in advance to deaerating treatment at 0 to 100° C. for one minute to 24 hours under a reduced pressure of 0.001 to 50 torr.

    Gem-disubstituted cyclohexadienone in which the gem substituents are a perfluoroalkyl group and a trihydrocar­bylsiloxy group are prepared by perfluoroalkylating a quinone with a perfluoroalkyltrihydrocarbylsilane in the presence of an active catalyst under essentially anhydrous conditions, preferably in a suitable liquid phase reaction medium, most preferably in a dipolar aprotic solvent. These gem-disubstituted compounds are readily convertible to perfluoroalkyl-substituted aromatics and thus provide a means of circumventing the traditional need for photo-­chlorination followed by halogen exchange in the prepara­tion of such products.
