  • Blend of polyalkylene terephthalate and high molecular weight wholly aromatic polyester and process for producing the same

    A process for producing a polymer blend which exhibits an anisotropic melt phase and is capable of forming shaped articles having satisfactory mechanical properties is provided. The process comprises the steps of (a) post-polymerizing a melt processable wholly aromatic polyester which is capable of forming an anisotropic melt phase apart from the blend and (b) subsequently intimately mixing together approximately 85 to 95 percent by weight of the wholly aromatic polyester and approximately 5 to 15 percent by weight of a polyalkylene terephthalate. The post-polymerizing step is conducted at a temperature and for a period of time sufficient to increase the inherent viscosity of the wholly aromatic polyester by at least approximately 50 percent, preferably by at least approximately 100 percent. The polyalkylene terephthalate is preferably polyethylene terephthalate. The present invention further provides a polymer blend which is capable of exhibiting an anisotropic melt phase and the ability to form shaped articles having satisfactory mechanical properties. The blend comprises (a) approximately 5 to 16 percent by weight of a polyalkylene terephthalate and (b) approximately 85 to 95 percent by weight of a melt processable wholly aromatic polyester which is capable of forming an anisotropic melt phase apart from the blend, the wholly aromatic polyester having been subjected prior to blending to post-polymerization so as to increase the inherent viscosity thereof by at least approximately 50 percent. The blend preferably comprises approximately 10 percent by weight of the polyalkylene terephthalate and approximately 90 percent by weight of the melt processable wholly aromatic polyester.

    Polyalkyleneterephthalate blends containing about 3 and about 30 weight percent of a melt-processable polyary­late liquid crystal polymer, preferably containing an impact modifier, are shown to have significantly enhanced thermal properties while maintaining substantially the mechanical and low temperature properties of the polyalky­leneterephthalate. The blends are suitable for making molded objects such as permanent ovenware capable of repeated use in both conventional thermal and microwave ovens. A significant use of the polyethyleneterephthalate blends is in the thermoformable, CPET, dual-ovenable tray market.
