  As dichromatic dyes to be used in a liquid crystal color display device, compounds represented by the following formula (1): for example, 4'-octylphenyl perylene-3,9-dicarboxylate, are proposed. These compounds have the following characteristics: (1) they possess enough coloring power even in a small amount, (2) they have a large dichromatic ratio and show a large contrast between the state when voltage is applied thereto and the state when no voltage is applied thereto, (3) they have enough compatibility with a liquid crystal, and (4) they are excellent in durability, show good stability, and do not deteriorate display performance even when used for a long time.
